MASH—the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware—is the current crash-testing standard published by AASHTO. It replaced the older NCHRP Report 350 testing protocol, which had been in use since 1993. MASH introduced updated vehicle types, impact speeds, and evaluation criteria that more closely reflect the size and weight of vehicles on today's roads, including the 5,000-lb pickup truck that is now a standard test vehicle.
TL-3 refers to Test Level 3, the designation used for devices tested to absorb impacts at speeds up to 62.5 MPH. During TL-3 evaluation, the attenuator is struck head-on by a 2,420-lb passenger car and separately by a 5,000-lb pickup truck, both traveling at 62.5 MPH. The device is assessed on its ability to capture or redirect the impacting vehicle, limit occupant risk values (such as deceleration forces), and remain in place without producing dangerous debris. TL-3 is the test level most commonly specified for devices intended for use on high-speed roadways.
